turato architects exposes wooden structure for mediterranean vacation home in croatia

located on a spacious plot and set in a rich mediterranean garden that overlooks the sea, the ‘wooden house’ by turato architects reveals its purity through the open spaces and raw materiality. as a vacation home in island krk, croatia, the project conveys a relaxing and leisurely atmosphere, with open areas that allow the breeze to flow through and people to move from one activity to another. the use of raw materials throughout the residence results in contemporary interiors whose functions can evolve over time.

turato architects envisioned the project by exposing the ‘strong poetics of wooden construction.’ the house is designed as an open structure with multiple entrances and exits, creating a matrix of different ambiences within the interior and exterior of the house, and the transitional spaces in between. this allows a variety of areas to intertwine with each other, creating a flowing circulation throughout the house.

the roof of the house is clad with traditional tiles in different sizes and colors. and its dimension creates a deep porch derived from long beams that define the transitional zone of the house towards the outside. the exposed timber structure brings a transparency to the spaces, revealing the construction itself.

the wooden house has no classic windows or doors, it doesn’t have structural walls or brick or concrete elements. there are no enclosed rooms, distinct areas or a basement. the house has virtually no permanent residents, no classical spatial hierarchy, nor a clearly defined function.  this enables varied programs to exist, including leisure, and relaxation. these concepts are ‘enclosed’ in small boxes placed under the roof of the house, which contain all the necessary zones, devices and household appliances.

spaces between the inner and outer space of the house, located at the corners of the building, are designed as winter and summer gardens. the gardens are covered with polycarbonate and polypropylene panels. the project strives to achieve a specific spatial atmosphere through the use of classical materials and construction methods.
