Renovation Casa d’Abreu Neto – Siza’s First Work / Álvaro Siza Vieira

March 3, 2026 Susanna Moreira 0

Álvaro Siza writes in the descriptive memory of the renovation of the Casa d’Abreu Neto: “It was on April 20, 2022, that I returned to the first house I designed, this time to renovate it. After 65 years since its construction, it was natural for a profound intervention to be necessary while maintaining the authenticity of the house…”. The Casa d’Abreu Neto is now a space for public enjoyment, establishing itself as a living museum of modern Portuguese architecture and preserving the family memory that gave rise to it.

It proposes a measured and respectful interior intervention within the 1983 building, aiming to clarify the spatial organization and improve the fluidity of use; thus, the kitchen and the bedroom are swapped. From the entrance, an opening guides the eye and gradually reveals a perspective of the volumes within the living space.

This project responds to Nanping Village’s unique cultural identity centered on “image” (photography and film), transforming the Cheng Family Ancestral Hall into a hybrid public space that integrates villagers’ leisure activities, cultural events, and a public library. The design strictly adheres to heritage conservation requirements, introducing new functions to meet diverse needs without altering the ancestral hall’s main structure.

The Multi-Purpose Social Center is an initiative promoted by the Concello de Carballeda de Avia as part of an ambitious rural revitalization plan for the Model Village of Muimenta. The initiative aims to activate a rural core in the process of abandonment by recovering the adjacent lands with high productive capacity, as well as rehabilitating its built environment. Through this new governance model, the goal is to improve the quality of life for its inhabitants, encourage the retention of the younger population, and generate attractions for new residents, promoting economic activity in the land, the recovery of traditional crafts, the provision of affordable housing, and the improvement of technological services.

Renovation of the Old Riverside House / Ref Architects + 0.5m Studio

February 24, 2026 Andreas Luco 0

Project Background and Site Understanding — The site is located on an elevated riverside plot along the Wuxi River in Wangcunkou Town, Suichang County, Zhejiang Province, descending toward a natural stone riverbank. Historically, it served as an important water transportation dock during the Ming and Qing dynasties and later became an active area of revolutionary history. With the shift of time, the site has remained abandoned for many years. Although the village is structured along the river, most of the riverbank is occupied by residential buildings, leaving little public access to the water. The renovated house sits between a small plaza and the riverbank, and its enclosed condition had long blocked villagers’ approach to the water. The design goal therefore emerged clearly: to transform “separation” into “connection” by renewing the old house and releasing an openly accessible waterfront public space for the community.

The old Biston factory is located approximately forty kilometers from the city of Kermanshah, where many workers spend their entire workweek and have limited opportunities to participate in the city’s cultural events. Furthermore, Kermanshah itself has very few cultural spaces. Within the factory, there is a space between the production halls that was once used as a kitchen but has been unused for many years.

Heyi office / DPAA Design

February 21, 2026 韩爽 - HAN Shuang 0

The project is situated within a garment-focused industrial park in Guangzhou, where the primary activities encompass office operations and production. The original structure is a three-story, cube-shaped building with a frame system—consistent with most structures in the park, it abuts the main thoroughfare directly, enclosed on all sides, and presents an almost collisional interface with the street front, lacking any form of buffer zone. The design brief calls for the transformation of this cubic building into a garment design office capable of accommodating approximately 100 occupants. The high occupancy density, combined with the inherently strong functional attributes of the office typology, introduces a pronounced sense of spatial density to the site. Against the backdrop of prioritizing functional requirements, the design process is initiated.
