This Gateway project represents the connection of people to the environment through education and history. At the center of the project is the heart: a gathering point referencing both traditional African and indigenous habitation. The heart acts as the communal space before introducing visitors to their journey into Wild Africa, providing protection from the harsh weather conditions while offering small glimpses of the vast surroundings. This celebration of arrival builds anticipation for the imminent experience.

School of Biological Science / Kosloff Architecture

This project embraces our environmental responsibility to adapt rather than discard existing building stock and in doing so addresses the question of what it means to re-skin an existing 1960’s modernist building in a contemporary manner. The project was undertaken as a collaboration between Kosloff Architecture, artist Callum Morton and Monash Art Projects (MAP) and Rush Wright Associates Pty Ltd. Collectively, the focus was to deliver a building that performed exceptionally well environmentally and to create an enduring outcome that contributed to the University’s Public Art Strategy.

The location is the former site of Xu Qin Village Committee, a traditional U-shaped compound built in the 1990s with a double-pitch roof and red tiles. It is a brick-concrete structure building with a concrete cornice and attic made of prefabricated concrete board. May 30, 2022 Susanna Moreira 0

The Tropical Greenhouses and the new on-site Science Corner are located in the high town of Alta de Coimbra. They belong to the University’s Botanical Garden built in 1772 by the Marquis de Pombal. The Tropical Greenhouses, completed in 1859, are one of the first examples of iron architecture in Portugal, their reference being the Kew Gardens greenhouses in England. The intervention in the greenhouses involved restoring and recuperating the existing structures and implementing suitable technical solutions for the growth of the plants and for the use of the space, namely for receiving visits. These conditions implied new shading and ventilation means, to guarantee the appropriate hygrometric and moisture levels and access to and within the building.
