As one of the happiest cities in China, Chengdu stands out from other first and second-tier cities with its unique “slow life” urban culture that effortlessly blends with its rapid city development. The city boasts of an exciting hybrid of leisurely activities that spill out onto the public realm, where street-side tea sipping and outdoor corner hangouts are a part of typical Chengdu life. It is a place where the young and old coexist, and 24-hour culture is more the norm than the exception.

Third, it is a link that integrates many elements. The location, scale, and transportation resources of the project determine that it is a “hub park” integrating commercial, hub, coastal activities, and other elements. The podium connects the surrounding, and the swirling open volume integrates the subway, Elements such as commerce, pedestrian system, waterfront activities, and roof gardens are combined to become a “Central Park”.

The intrinsic nature of sports architecture prompts us to rethink how to organize its intrinsic relationship with the city. We wanted to build a sports community driven by the stadium, which fully considers the multiple possibilities in the urban context and integrates them into urban life with a forward-looking perspective. At the same time, the concept of sharing and opening runs through the whole life cycle of the building, making it a link between culture and life, giving sports buildings unique public service value.– Qian Xidong

Copper Blockhouse / Wutopia Lab

Copper blockhouse · Full Metal Jacket – In 2021, I was invited by my friend Qiye, to design a central building in the center of the creative industry park that I renovated for him. However, we are both spaced out those days as our wives are facing a similar dilemma. We are distracted, yet tried to take our minds off anxiety by working, but it was hard to fully concentrate. Various possibilities of functions such as clubs and cafés were vetoed, as these ordinary functions cannot convince the two middle-aged men who were in panic. Eventually, we agreed on a multi-functional spiritual fortress as the central building. I said to Qiye that we needed to justify our existence, which was impossible for successful commercial development to achieve. The museum is the church of the modern age, and it might settle our disturbed souls. Therefore, we used the museum as the base of the work. Nautical machinery and ships are huge metal objects, therefore, I decided to build the building entirely of metal, and copper was chosen in the end. I am superstitious that metal shell is strong enough to protect our frightened souls.

The project is located north of Kangbashi No. 9 Primary School in Kangbashi District, Ordos City. The west side is Ordos Applied Technology College, and the north side is a natural red sandstone slope. There are dense schools and residential areas around the project, and there is a lack of leisure activity venues nearby. The design team strives to utilize the existing resources of the site, combine environmental characteristics, and take nature, sustainability, and national fitness as the core concepts. With the help of large-scale landscape texture, they create a landscape-oriented, functional, evolutionary, participatory, and high-quality spatial form, and endow it with sports concepts to provide a rich, healthy, and natural life experience for the city.

MONOLOGO Coffee / SpaceStation

May 17, 2023 Collin Chen 0

MONOLOGO (Monong Coffee) is located in the industrial landscape protection area of Beijing’s 751 Park. This site includes a furnace tank area on the south side of the original 751 plant which has been wholly preserved, while a vast open space spreads between the west side and the main road cutting through the park. The core part of the site is a factory building with a concrete frame structure dating back to the 1970s. Three imposing furnace tanks are preserved in the center of the site. Two yellow and black steel structures were added to the south, east and west corners of the plant on two separate occasions. Our renovation project should be counted as the fourth “extension” of the site. We hope that memories of former interventions may be fully preserved, and through this project, they will eventually be connected into a cohesive narrative.
